Excerpt from Call of the Herald:

Outside the lesson hall, Chase ducked into a darkened recess and waited for Osbourne. Roset came first, and she cast him a haughty glance, but he was grateful that she said nothing. Using the darkness for cover, he held his breath as Peten stormed by, followed by a mob of agitated townies. Minda and Celise walked by, and Osbourne seemed to be trying to hide behind them. Hoping no one noticed, Chase grabbed Osbourne by the shirt and dragged him into the alcove. Osbourne let out a small yelp before he realized it was Chase who had grabbed him, and he looked over his shoulder more than once.

“Looks like Edling held Catrin after class,” Chase said.

“I told you he looked boiled,” Osbourne said, but there was a tremble in his voice, and he looked nervously over his shoulder. “Are you going to wait around for Cat?”

“I can’t. I promised my dad I’d help with the afternoon deliveries.”

“I can’t either,” Osbourne said. “I’ve chores to do, and I should probably study for the test we have coming up.”

“Bah, who needs to study?” Chase asked with a grin. “Just remember everything Edling says; that’s all.”

Osbourne shook his head. “That may work for you, but my father’ll tan my hide if I bring home bad marks. I’d better get Patches saddled and get going, or I’m going to run out of light.”

Chase peeked around the corner before walking back into the light, half expecting to find Peten and the rest of the townies waiting for him, but the stables were eerily quiet. Only Patches remained in her stall, and Chase stayed with Osbourne while he got her saddled.

“Never seen everyone clear out so quickly,” Chase said.

“I’m starting to think the snake was a bad idea,” Osbourne said as he tightened the girth. “Feels like I’ve got squirrels in my guts. You don’t think they’ll do anything to Cat, do you?”

“You worry too much,” Chase said, but he secretly wondered if Osbourne was right. It seemed strange that Peten and the others had left so quickly, and letting Osbourne and Catrin travel home alone suddenly seemed like a very bad idea. There was nothing he could do about it, though, no way to take back what was already done, and he tried to drive the worry from his mind. “I’m sure everything will be fine.”

“I hope you’re right,” Osbourne said as he mounted. Patches, who was a well-mannered mare, must have sensed Osbourne’s nervousness, for she danced around the stable, her ears twitching as she spun. Osbourne soothed her with a hand on her neck, and she trotted away with her tail tucked. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” Osbourne said with a wave.

“Be careful,” Chase said, betraying his own fears, and Osbourne rode away looking more nervous than ever.

Checking around every corner as he went, Chase made his way to the mill. At each turn he expected to find the townies waiting, and their absence only increased his anxiety. “I wish they would just get on with it,” he mumbled to himself as he passed the market.

When he saw his father waiting with the wagon already loaded, though, he forgot his fears. They had enough work to keep them until nightfall, and he would have time to think of little else.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Adventure for All Ages February 26, 2013

This book is appropriate for any age group even though it’s geared toward young adults. It is really an enjoyable read for all ages! The main character is a young man with a lot of love and heart and you end up rooting for him from beginning to end. The author gives a good amount of background as to how Hartlandia came about. Excellently written!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful fairytale!, February 21, 2013
By Dr. S. Drecker – See all my reviews
My kids (5+7) loved this story! It starts out with a nice farmer boy, who only wants to help his family. So he travels into the wide world, totally unaware of what he’s about to get himself into. His ‘simple’ and practical way of looking at things bring him from one humorous situation into another. My kids laughed and cheered for him the whole way.

And when he reaches his goal, the king, things really get silly. Even when the story was done, my children continued to ask questions as to why the kings did what they did. They really got into this imaginary world.

The main character is easy to relate to and it’s a pure joy to accompany him on his adventures. This is definitely a story we’re going to read a second…a third… several times.

A SHAPERS NOVEL

One

Phoebe was too far away to sense whether the boy had one heart or two. Through the maze of trees with clattering leaves, she could see him moving with purposeful speed. He was headed toward her destination—a brownstone chapel perched at the top of a small hill. Not knowing the boy’s nature made Phoebe hesitate. Then came the sound of tower bells. Eight o’clock. There was no time to think of an alternate route. She was officially late for the Conversion.

A loud, echoing crack quickened Phoebe’s pace as lightning slashed the indigo sky above her. She had barely reached the base of the hill when rain began pounding down. Clutching the camera that hung from the strap around her neck, she sprinted the final stretch, arriving breathless.

Phoebe wiped the rain from her face, and then entered the chapel. Inside, light from moon-facing windows cast a misty glow across the sanctuary, the air redolent with the smoke of a blazing fireplace. She glanced around the heart of the nondenominational Green Lane Academy. It seemed so ordinary, so quiet, even peaceful. Rows of pews with velvet cushions ran the width of the room. She moved between them, taking care to remain in the shadows. An irregular shape in a dark corner caught her eye and Phoebe could just barely make out the outline of the boy. He knelt with his head between his hands, his body huddled against a pew. Praying.

Phoebe paused several feet away and waited. After a moment she felt energy seeping from the boy’s skin, raising the hairs on hers. Cold and electric, it meant one thing: the boy had only one heart. She couldn’t risk him seeing what she had come there to do. That meant waiting. Just then, something stirred behind her.

Part Two
Venturing Out of Songais

22

When my alarm sounded at 6:30, I leapt out of bed, eager for another opportunity to attend a course at the Université François-Rabelais. I wanted to make a good impression on my professors and peers, so I spent a bit more time on my appearance, brushing some blush on my cheekbones and curling my eyelashes before applying mascara. The result prompted a grin from my mirror image. Pulling on a sweater, I grabbed my purse and ran downstairs.
After I completed my usual morning routine with the children, Madame Dubois rattled off a list of chores, my pulse accelerating with concern as I listened. Has she forgotten that I’m going to Tours today?
“Wash up the dishes in the sink, change the sheets on my bed, and sweep the entranceway.”
“I have to catch the ten o’clock train, or I’ll be late for my class,” I reminded her.
“Well then, you had better get started.”

Rushing out the door an hour later, mumbling angry words, I half-jogged the road to Songais and barely arrived at the train in time.
Oooh . . . she makes me so mad!
Out of breath, I boarded the coach and found a place to sit down. Unclenching my jaw, stretching my neck right, and then left, I willed myself to relax. I was determined not to let Madame Dubois ruin my day.
As the train pulled out of Tours, the attendant, a young man about my age, sauntered down the aisle, his gaze darting back and forth as he identified new passengers. I watched him, admiring his masculine features, until he reached me. Our eyes locked, his sky blue on my moss green, and my stomach lurched.
“Vous visitez Songais?” he asked.
“Non, je suis arrivée récemment,” I said handing him my rail pass. No, I arrived recently.
He glanced at my document and leaned in closer. So close, in fact, that I smelled his cologne, musk with a hint of citrus. “Linda . . . d’où êtes-vous?” Where are you from?
“Je viens des Etats-Unis.”
He smiled and my heart fluttered. “Enchanté,” he said, and added, “Je m’appelle Renaud.”
“Enchantée,” I responded, feeling tongue-tied.
Renaud tried out his English. “How long you visiting?”
“Many months,” I muttered.
“It is wonderful!” he exclaimed, and heads turned to look at us. I felt the heat rush to my cheeks. “I go now, Linda, but I hope to see you again.”
Picking up his pace, he moved down the aisle and exited into the next coach. A few of the passengers glared at me, but I ignored them. I had enjoyed my interchange with Renaud and felt flattered to receive so much attention from such an attractive Frenchman. From now on, my rides to and from Tours might be the highlight of my day.

This England is not our England, it is a forgotten one. One stuck in time. At night the people sometimes see the gods battling for control in the skies, or do they?

Join him in this saucy, revengeful, swashbuckling, epic story, as Sir Wendel finds himself in intrigue and mystery when he takes on an apprentice as part of a large fee deal, a young princess of a foreign kingdom bent on revenge and willing to do anything to get it.

What readers are saying:

Biola Olatunde rated it 5 of 5 stars

No this book is deceptively simple as the title goes. You are tempted to expect a rake, ladies of easy virtues and greed. You expect to read about ruffians, roughnecks and a character that will be soulless, amoral and mean. Sir Wendel the main character is not a rake, a roughneck and does not fit in to the general definition of a bounty hunter. You find that Merle has written a beautiful deep story about the human mind, its preoccupation with myth, gods and wars. You read the Bounty Hunter, and came away from it scratching my head. I had at first read just enjoyed myself until the sneaking feeling came that it was not just any story about thieves, but questions about the necessity for war, empire, and man’s real place in creation and what he really wants. I did not have answers but like Walter Kaperon whom I think is the real Merlin of the book.. everything is not really as it seems and Man has existed continuously but has learned very liitle despite the efforts of the g ods, science and creation. I wish to congratulate Merle on this book and also IFWG publishing. They seem to have a good nose.

saucy, swashbuckling, revengeful

I had the pleasure of reading this book prior to publication.

It is a story that works on two dimensions – at the superficial level, it is a story about revenge and fixing what is right – a classic tale that fits right in any genre, but Westerns come to mind. But if you scratch the surface, there’s a lot more. It is also a critical dig at the abuse of power, and particularly by people who have sacred responsibilities to their nations and people. It is also a human story, about how trials and tribulations can change people, and yet, with courage, retain what is essential to be human.

The story is saucy without being over the top. It is swashbuckling, like any good heroic fantasy should be, and it has its moments of humor.

A very good read indeed. Worthy of 5 stars.

Excerpt from Kiss of Midnight:

In a helicopter circling the ruins, Colonel Kantak Johnson, former governor of Alaska and current member of the North American Parliament, surveyed the craters of the two bombs that had devastated the city: one an underwater blast near the harbor and the other an airburst over the city center. The sub-megaton blasts had left only steel skeletons of skyscrapers, a few recognizable buildings, car-shaped objects and tidal wave debris, all coated with pulverized rock and ash. Weeds, bushes and a scattering of small trees had begun to claim the ruins.

Kantak viewed the exposed, twisted girders of the city. They seemed naked, vaguely obscene. It should have a proper burial. He sniffed the air: the smell of seaweed and salt water. But to Kantak, who had lived in the once-vibrant city, it was now a smell of death. Then he saw a small segment of a bridge that once had crossed the river. He pointed to it for his pilot: “Land there, please.”
As they landed, Kantak looked toward a reed-infested swamp on the southwest bank. He saw a broken dome and fallen fluted columns projecting from brackish water. But, contrary to his hopes, nothing visible remained of the engineering library that had once stood there. This is the bridge. He had crossed it many times. He said, “There’s something I want to check.”

Kantak and the pilot donned dust masks and scraped debris off the broken concrete walkway near the remains of a lamp post. The cleaned concrete revealed the painted words “Halfway to.” Behind the mask, memories closed his eyes. This is where it all began, on this spot, twenty years ago, here in Boston.

Excerpt from Kiss of Midnight:

CHAPTER ONE

Present Day

“Remarkable. Just look at the use of light and shadow–”

“You see how this image hints at the sorrow of the place, yet manages to convey a promise of hope?”

“–one of the youngest photographers to be included in the museum’s new modern art collection.”

Gabrielle Maxwell stood back from the group of exhibit attendees, nursing a flute of warm champagne as yet another crowd of faceless, nameless, Very Important People enthused over the two dozen black-and-white photographs displayed on the gallery walls. An introvert by nature, it made her uncomfortable to be on the receiving end of this much praise and attention . . . but it did pay the bills. Quite nicely, at that. Tonight it was also paying the bills for her friend Jamie, the owner of the funky little art gallery on Newbury Street, which, at ten minutes to closing, was still packed with prospective buyers.

Numb with the whole process of meeting and greeting, of smiling politely as everyone from moneyed Back Bay wives to multi-pierced, tattooed Goths tried to impress one another–and her–with analyses of her work, Gabrielle couldn’t wait for the exhibit to end. She had been hiding in the shadows for the past hour, contemplating a stealth escape to the comfort of a warm shower and a soft pillow, both waiting at her apartment on the city’s East side.

But she had promised a few of her friends–Jamie, Kendra, and Megan–that she would join them for dinner and drinks after the showing. As the last couple of stragglers made their purchases and left the gallery, Gabrielle found herself being gathered up and swept into a cab before she had a chance to so much as think of begging off.

“What an awesome night!” Jamie’s androgynous blond hair swung around his face as he leaned across the other two women to clutch Gabrielle’s hand. “I’ve never had so much weekend traffic in the gallery–and tonight’s sales receipts were amazing! You weren’t too miserable in there, were you?”

“How could she be, with half of Boston falling at her feet?” gushed Kendra, before Gabrielle could answer for herself. “Was that the governor I saw you talking with over the canapés?”

“Yeah,” Gabrielle replied without much enthusiasm. She had a stack of business cards in her pocketbook–at least a year of steady work, if she wanted it–so why was she tempted to open the taxi window and scatter them all to the wind?

“Is anything wrong, Gab?” Megan asked from beside her on the taxi’s bench seat. “You seem quiet.”

Gabrielle shrugged. “I’m sorry. I’m just . . . I don’t know. Tired, I guess.”

“Somebody get this woman a drink–stat!” Kendra, the dark-haired nurse, joked.

“Nah,” Jamie countered, sly and catlike. “What our Gab really needs is a man. You’re too serious, sweetie. It’s not healthy to let your work consume you like you do. Have some fun! When’s the last time you got laid, anyway?”

Too long ago, but Gabrielle wasn’t really keeping track.

“Jamie is right, you know,” Kendra added. “You need to loosen up, get a little wild.”

“If you like dance clubs, there’s a new one just opened in the north end,” the cabbie interjected, his spearmint chewing gum cracking as he spoke. “I been takin’ fares over there all week. Fact, took two already tonight–fancy after-hours place called La Notte.”

“Ooh, La No-tay,” Jamie purred, tossing a playful look over his shoulder and arching an elegant brow. “Sounds perfectly wicked to me, girls. Let’s go!”

The club La Notte was housed in a High Victorian Gothic building that had long been known as St. John’s Trinity Parish Church, until recent Archdiocese of Boston payouts on priest sex scandals forced the closings of dozens of such places around the city. Now, as Gabrielle and her friends made their way inside the crowded club, synthesized trance and techno music rang in the rafters. On the dance floor–and in nearly every square foot of La Notte’s main floor and the gallery above–people moved against one another in writhing, mindless sensuality.

“Holy shit,” Kendra shouted over the music, raising her arms and dancing her way through the thick crowd. “What a place, huh? This is crazy!”

They hadn’t even cleared the first knot of clubbers before a tall, lean guy swooped in on the spunky brunette and bent to say something in her ear. Kendra gave a throaty laugh and nodded enthusiastically at him.

“Boy wants to dance,” she giggled, passing her handbag to Gabrielle. “Who am I to refuse!”

“This way,” Jamie said, pointing to a small empty table near the bar as their friend trotted off with her partner.

The three of them got seated and Jamie ordered a round of drinks. Gabrielle scanned the dance floor for Kendra, but she’d been devoured in the midst of the crowded space. Despite the crush of people all around, Gabrielle could not dismiss the sudden sensation that she and her friends were sitting in a spotlight. Like they were somehow under scrutiny simply for being there in the club. It was nuts to think it. Maybe she had been working too much, spending too much time alone at home, if being out in public could make her feel so self-conscious. So paranoid.

“Here’s to Gab!” Jamie exclaimed over the roar of the music, raising his martini glass in salute.

Megan lifted hers, too, and clinked it against Gabrielle’s. “Congratulations on a great exhibit tonight!”

“Thanks, you guys.”

As she sipped the neon yellow concoction, Gabrielle’s feeling of being observed returned. Or rather, increased. She felt a stare reach out to her from across the darkened distance. Over the rim of her martini glass, she glanced up and caught the glint of a strobe light nicking off a pair of dark sunglasses.

Sunglasses hiding a gaze that was unmistakably fixed on her through the crowd.

The quick flashes from the strobes cast his stark features in hard shadow, but Gabrielle’s eyes took him in at once. Spiky black hair falling loosely around a broad, intelligent brow and lean, angular cheeks. A strong, stern jaw. And his mouth . . . his mouth was generous and sensual, even when quirked in that cynical, almost cruel line.

Gabrielle looked away, unnerved, a rush of warmth skittering along her limbs. His face lingered in her head, burned there in an instant, like an image set to film. She put down her drink and braved another quick glance to where he stood. But he was gone.

A loud crash sounded at the other end of the bar, jerking Gabrielle’s attention over her shoulder. At one of the crowded tables, liquor seeped onto the floor, spilled from several broken glasses that littered the black lacquered surface. Five guys in dark leather and shades were having words with another guy, this one wearing a Dead Kennedys wife-beater tank and torn, faded blue jeans. One of the thugs in leather had his arm slung around a drunk-looking platinum blond, who seemed to know the punker. Boyfriend, apparently. He made a grab for the girl’s arm, but she slapped him away and bent her head to let one of the thugs put his mouth on her neck. She stared defiantly at her furious boyfriend, all the while playing with the long brown hair of the guy fastened to her throat.

“That’s messed up,” Megan said, turning back around as the situation escalated across the bar.

“Sure is,” Jamie added as he finished off his martini and flagged a server to bring another round. “Evidently that chick’s mama forgot to tell her it’s bad news not to leave with the guy who brought you.”

Gabrielle watched for another moment, long enough to see a second biker move in on the girl and descend on her slackened mouth. She accepted both of them together, her hands coming up to caress the dark head at her neck and the pale one that was sucking her face like he meant to eat her alive. The punker boyfriend shouted a string of obscenities at the girl, then turned around and shoved his way into the crowd.

Gabrielle’s skin prickled. “This place is creeping me out.”

Her friends didn’t seem to hear her over the driving pound of the music. They also didn’t seem to share Gabrielle’s unease. Something wasn’t quite right here, and Gabrielle could not shake the feeling that eventually the night was going to get ugly.

She found her gaze drifting over the sea of bobbing heads and swaying bodies, surreptitiously searching for the sunglass-shaded eyes that had been watching her before. Was he with the other thugs–one of that gang of bikers still stirring up trouble on the other side of the bar? He was dressed like them, certainly carried the same dark air of danger about him.

Whoever he was, Gabrielle saw no trace of him now.

She leaned back in her chair, then nearly jumped out of her skin when a pair of hands came to rest on her shoulders from behind.

“Here you are! I’ve been looking all over for you guys!” Kendra, sounding breathless and animated at the same time, leaned over the table. “Come on. I’ve got a table for us on the other side of the club. Brent and some of his friends want to party with us!”

Gabrielle stood up and looped the strap of her handbag over her shoulder. “You guys go on, have fun. I’m beat. I think I’m just going to catch a cab and head back home.”

Kendra gave her a little girl pout. “You’re sure you won’t stay? Just one more drink?”

“Nah. I really need to take off, and get some air. Enjoy yourselves, but be careful, right?”

“Suit yourself.” Kendra stepped in and planted a quick peck on her cheek. As she withdrew, Gabrielle caught a whiff of vodka, and, beneath that, something less obvious. Something musky, queerly metallic. “You’re a buzzkill, Gab, but I still love you.”

With a wink, Kendra looped her arms with Jamie and Megan’s, then playfully tugged them toward the churning mass of people.

Gabrielle immediately started her trek for the door, anxious to be out of the club. The longer she had stayed there, the louder the music seemed to get, drumming in her head, making it hard to think. People pushed at her from all sides as she tried to pass through them, squeezing her into the press of dancing, flailing, gyrating bodies. She was jostled and nudged, pawed at and groped by unseen hands in the dark, until, finally, she stumbled into the vestibule near the club’s entrance, then out the heavy double doors.

The night was cool outside, and dark. She drew in a deep breath, clearing her head of the noise and smoke and the unsettling atmosphere of La Notte. The music still throbbed out here, the strobe lights still flashed like small explosions behind the tall stained glass windows above, but Gabrielle relaxed a bit now that she was free.

She spotted a yellow cab coming her way, and thrust out her hand to call it over. “Taxi!”

As the empty cab navigated across the lanes of nighttime traffic and roared up beside her, the doors of the nightclub burst open with the force of a hurricane.

“Hey, man! What the–” Behind Gabrielle on the steps, a male voice rose to an octave just north of fear. “Touch me again, and I’ll–”

“You’ll what?” taunted another voice, this one low and deadly, and flanked by several others that were chuckling in amusement.

It was the gang from the bar, the bikers or whatever they were, in black leather and shades. The six of them circled the punker like a pack of wolves, taking turns swiping at him, toying with him like prey.

The kid threw a swing at one of them–missed–and the situation went from bad to worse.

All at once, the scuffle came crashing toward Gabrielle at the curb. The gang of thugs threw the punker up against the hood of the cab, slamming their fists into the kid’s face. Blood splattered like raindrops from his nose and mouth, some of it hitting Gabrielle. She took a step back, stunned and horrified. The kid scrabbled to get away, but his attackers stayed on him, beating him with a fury Gabrielle could hardly fathom.

“Get off my car!” the cabbie shouted out his open window. “Jesus Christ! Take it somewhere else, you hear me!”

One of the assailants turned his head toward the cabbie, smiled a terrible smile, then brought his large fist down on the windshield, shattering the glass into a spiderweb of cracks. Gabrielle saw the cabbie cross himself, his mouth working soundlessly within the car. There was a grinding of gears, then a piercing screech of tires as the taxi jerked into reverse, dislodging the burden from its hood.

“Wait!” Gabrielle screamed, too late.

Her ride home–her escape from this brutal scene–was gone.

With a cold lump of fear lodged in her throat, she watched the cab speed off, careening into the street and its red tail lights disappearing into the dark.

An ancient artifact with powerful secrets, a rogue government agency and a Nazi nuclear weapons factory cause the lives of two women from different times to spin out of control. World War II ended in 1945, but a bizarre incident on an American bomber on a forgotten raid over Germany now threatens the security of the United States.

In late July, 1947, Brittany Beardsley had reservations on a flight to Las Vegas where she was to be married the next day. Her flight crashed on takeoff killing all on board in the fiery accident. That she had missed the plane while her fiancé made it were not accidents.

In the present time, school teacher Kate Darron’s bad day gets much worse when a strange woman wearing clothes from another era knocks on her apartment door. Kate is troubled that the woman seems to know every detail of her life. “Who are you?” Kate asks. “Think of me as the fairy godmother of death,” the woman replies. “You shall be dead in less than half an hour.”

These unrelated incidents bring Kate and Brittany together as they are forced to undertake a terrifying mission across continents and time, one on which survival is not an option.

Accolades:

Book was very well written. The story was wonderful, I couldn’t keep away from the book for very long.
I think it is a great read. I hated it when I was through as I wanted more.

Once I started reading I could hardly stop put it down. A lot of action and great thriller. I recomend it.

I recommend it for the sheer fun of reading and look forward to reading many more escapades/adventures of the main characters to come.

Excerpt from The Destiny Project:

“Think of me as the fairy godmother of death, Kate, come to deliver the unfortunate news that you shall be dead in less than half an hour,” Evelyn said.

Astonished and trembling, Kate sat down on the crimson couch and looked up at Evelyn Rankow.

“Yes, it’s really you in the photograph Kate. And, it is me in the other picture, not my grandmother.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” demanded an astounded Kate Darron. She was struggling to regain her composure, feigning a brave front. “That picture is seventy years old and was obviously altered. Who are you, Evelyn? Why are you playing games with me?”

Evelyn turned and walked to a table across the living room and pulled something from the drawer. As she walked back across the room, she said, “The photo was not altered, Kate. It is you in the picture. Perhaps this will explain things,” she added, handing a newspaper to Kate.

As Kate looked at the paper, she saw it was dated April 10. “This is tomorrow’s newspaper,” said Kate. How did you get this? They don’t deliver the paper until morning.” Then, as she glanced down the front page, she saw the heading above an article and her picture. “Local teacher Catherine Darron killed in car accident.”

“I’m getting out of here!” Kate exclaimed, and stood up.

“I’m afraid not, Kate,” Evelyn replied.

“Try and stop me,” Kate said, as she turned to run to the apartment door.

“Running is useless, my Dear,” countered Evelyn, as Kate pulled the door open.

Two stern looking men stood blocking the doorway. The unsmiling man with coal black hair, wide lapel and double breasted dark suit moved through the doorway, easily pushing Kate back inside the apartment. The second man also came into the apartment and positioned himself in front of the door. Both men were muscular and intimidating, neither was one to be fooled with.
Kate, forcing herself to remain calm, challenged Evelyn Rankow. “You can’t keep me here forever. I’ll escape sooner or later.”

“Sit down, Miss Darron,” Evelyn ordered forcefully, abruptly changing her tone. “I shall do the talking as you have very little time left.” She turned to the larger of the two men. “Henry, please bring our wine from the table.” Unsmiling and somber, Henry Darst walked toward the dining room table, filled the glasses and returned with two glasses of Chardonnay.

“I prefer civility, Miss Darron, don’t you? A toast to life,” Evelyn said, lifting her glass. As she couldn’t escape, Kate concluded her best strategy was to cooperate with the intimidating Evelyn Rankow. She would bide her time and make her move. Kate took a long gulp from the glass.

“Are you kidnapping me, Evelyn?” Kate asked, although she couldn’t imagine why. Her family was not wealthy and Kate had no money herself.

“It’s good wine, Kate,” is it not?” Evelyn asked, avoiding Kate’s question. “Henry is a connoisseur, you know.” The woman took another drink. Kate followed her lead and took another long gulp, wondering if she was trying to find courage in the alcohol.

“I’m sorry. I forgot to introduce Henry Darst and Ed Chambers, Kate.”

“Who are you, Evelyn, and what do you want from me?” Kate asked, ignoring Evelyn’s introduction of the two men.

“The reason I asked you so many questions,” Evelyn said, “is because I had to be absolutely certain it was you, Kate. That’s why I asked you about your experience with guns and flying airplanes. To answer your other question, I would prefer to say that I’m here to offer you a proposition, however you really have no choice in the matter.”

Kate, increasingly fearful of Evelyn Rankow, listened. As Evelyn sat on the couch facing her, Kate again noticed the woman’s dated clothes. The men’s double breasted suits and wide ties were also a style from a bygone era. While Kate thought Evelyn’s clothes were eccentric, the men’s equally out of date wardrobes added to the mystery of the visitors. Something quite eerie was happening and Kate was becoming more frightened with each passing second.

“How can I be in a picture taken seventy years ago? How can you have tomorrow’s newspaper which hasn’t even been printed yet?” Kate asked fearfully.

“Kate, what I’m going to tell you will sound preposterous, but I will try to explain in the short time we have. You will die in that car accident. That is your destiny.”

“What?” Kate gasped, her voice shaking. “Who are you people? Are you crazy?” Kate asked, unable believe what she was hearing.
