Excerpt from The Color of Heaven:

Not long after I crossed the border into New Hampshire, the temperature plummeted. If I had been out walking, I would have felt it on my cheeks. The chill would have entered my throat and lungs, but I was strapped tightly into the cozy confines of my vehicle with the heat blasting out of the dashboard vents, and was therefore shielded from the conditions outside. I will always wonder what brought that deer out onto the road just as the puddles from the melting snow turned to ice. I saw her out of the corner of my eye, galloping onto the pavement, and my whole body went rigid.

Wrenching the steering wheel left to avoid her, I hit the brakes at the same time, which was, of course, the worst thing I could have done.

The car whipped around 180 degrees, so I was now facing the oncoming headlights from the vehicles traveling behind me. My tires skimmed sideways across the pavement toward the shoulder of the road.

I remember everything in excruciating detail, the noise especially, as my car rolled five times down the steep embankment. Glass shattered and smashed. Steel collapsed. The world spun in dizzying circles in front of my eyes, so I shut them and gripped the steering wheel hard, bracing my body against the jarring impact as the roof collapsed over the passenger side and the windows blew out.

Down I went, tumbling and bouncing over the rocks like a stone skipping across water.

Then all at once, it was over.

There was only white noise in my ears, and the thunderous sound of my heartbeat.

I opened my eyes to find myself hanging upside down in my seatbelt, with the side of my head wedged up against the roof.

The engine was still running. Other sounds emerged. Music blasted from the radio – an old favorite song of mine from the 80’s, The Killing Time, which was ironic, but in that heart-stopping moment, I was not that reflective. All I could think of was getting out of there.

Panic hit me. Hard. I felt trapped, frantic to escape, and began to thrash about.

I groped for the red button on the seatbelt buckle, but my hands were shaking so badly, I couldn’t push it.

My breaths came faster and faster.

I cried out, but no one heard.

Then suddenly, out of nowhere, a whip cracked. The vehicle shuddered.

I froze and tried to see past the smashed windshield in front of me. Everything outside the car was pure white, covered in snow.

If only I knew where I was. If only I could see something beyond the broken glass.

But it didn’t matter what I could, or could not, see. I knew what was happening…

My car was sitting on its roof, resting on a frozen lake. The crack of the whip was the sound of the ice breaking.

Creak… Groan…

My SUV shifted and began to slowly tip sideways…

Description of A Hand To Hold:

How can a mother reject her own child? How can a man give you safety and security one day, and be gone the next? How can a God who promises to never leave you nor forsake you allow it all to happen?

Michelle has learned to finally come to grips with lifes disappointments; she’s given up on God, because she feels he’s given up on her. but when Manny goes missing, can Michelle open up her heart, and allow God to see her through this tradgedy?

I found this book to be a refreshing change to the normal inspirational books out there. I was encouraged to continue my witness to those I come in contact with, as I don’t know the struggles they are facing. If they find life too hard to deal with, the Holy Spirit may direct them to me because of what they have seen in me and I may be able to help win them back to Christ.

I think it is a great gift to any mother especially with Mothers Day coming up. It will help teach moms that we should not shelter ourselves and our children so tightly that when trouble comes we have no support group. We must open our hearts up to love and to live.

An excerpt from A Hand To Hold:

Chapter One

Family was important to Michelle, even if she wasn’t close to her own. She had gladly given up her nursing career for Ross and the boys. She enjoyed the days she had spent with them; reading to them, and teaching the kid’s phonics, colors and their numbers. Best of all for her though, were the nature hikes. Her sons, Jason and Manny had coined them “Adventures into Nature”.

These were times where together they would discover tadpoles in their own back pond, or a beehive developing in the old lamppost out front.

“Why’d the bees pick our lamp?” Manny had inquired. His inquiry would lead to the three of them marching inside to the computer, and the discovery would begin. Together they unraveled the mysteries to many of their questions, like why bees built hives and the duties of the drone, worker and queen bees; or even the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a lovely yellow and black specked butterfly. Reading up on the butterflies encouraged the children to convince Michelle to start a butterfly garden from painted lady caterpillars. When the caterpillars had emerged into beautiful yellow and black spotted butterflies, the children let them out of their netted habitat and into the yard. Manny continued to look up into the sky for what seemed like hours swearing that he could still see each one of their speckled friends. Life she had thought couldn’t get any better. In one tragic event she was ironically proven right.

Ross her husband of seven years was killed, and so died all their dreams and plans for the future.

Dana Taylor‘s Frugal Find Under Nine:

Description of Hope For The Holidays:

Three short stories of inspiration, humor, and a touch of the angelic join the popular offer Hope for the Holidays.

Shiny Green Shoes– 1935 was a hard year on old Route 66. The unlikely friendship between a young, black girl and an aging white actress brings hope to a town down on its luck.

Refiner’s Fire–Nestled in her beautiful home in the San Diego hills, Dina Stein is determined to celebrate Hanukkah, even without her ungrateful daughter. Getting caught in a natural disaster isn’t on her agenda.

Patty’s AngelsLos Angeles, 1960. California is becoming a state of great contrasts. Downtown LA and the suburbs are only minutes, yet worlds, apart. A little girl named Patty brings people together, with the help of her celestial best friends.

Lynn O’Dell from Red Adept Reviews on Shiny Green Shoes

This adorable short story drew me in from the opening scene of a deserted theater. Mazie McDonald was there, contemplating her rise to fame and how it all started with her friendship of an elderly white woman who was an actress back in her prime.

I enjoyed this story from start to finish. Mazie’s friendship with Miss Peach was expertly built. The scenes were interesting, and the tale was pretty fast moving with no wasted words.

I began to wonder, about halfway through, how this story was going to tie into Christmas. Soon, it flowed nicely with some holiday spirit as Mazie and Miss Peach showed a town how to celebrate even in the depths of the Depression.

The ending was wonderful, with all threads of the story tied up neatly. I’m a fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, which are quite often based on short stories. I could easily see a movie being made from this one.

Patty’s Angels

Prologue

Los Angeles, 1960

It wasn’t the sound of the trucks grinding past her apartment window that roused her. Nor the flickering light from the Jewish deli across the street. Her senses were inured to those constants buzzing around her foggy head resting on the pillow. It was the smell of…could it be… was she dreaming? Gingerbread? And what was that voice?

A child’s greeting echoed in the hall. Knock, knock, knock. “Mewwy Chwistmas.”

Geraldine Blodgett (screen name Anna Stevens) tossed off the covers, swung her feet across the mattress and struggled to sit up. She felt sticky and icky; a bad taste lingered in her mouth. She was thirsty as hell. The silk nightie slithered across her body, then settled in place. An empty whiskey bottle on the small table was at once a source of shame and her best friend. One more empty bottle. If all her empties were piled on top of each other, would they reach to heaven? A lush’s Jacob’s ladder.

The knocking grew louder, a little girl chimed, “Mewwy Chwistmas.”

Geri thought she might be going ‘round the bend. Yet, the spicy, sweet scent lingered and footsteps approached. And, sure enough, some shoes appeared behind the threshold, visible through the crack under the door.

Knock, knock, knock. “Mewwy Chwistmas.”

Whispers. A card slid under the door.

Geri took halting steps toward the bright red envelope, almost a blinding contrast against the grimy carpet. She pushed her wavy, platinum hair out of her eyes as she bent to pick it up. And, oh the yummy, sugary aroma drew her hand to the knob.

Geri dwelled in the shadows, accustomed to the semi-dark, the colorless walls, a noir existence. She lived in that stark world. She’d long ago given up thinking she could find a Technicolor life. She might have simply thrown the envelope in the trash, but her mouth yearned for the sweet bite promised just outside the door. So, she opened it.

A woman and child had moved on to Auntie Z’s apartment a few feet down the hallway.

Knock, knock, knock. “Mewwy Chwistmas.”

The woman placed a Christmas bag down as she pushed another red envelope under Auntie Z’s door.

The little girl turned and smiled. Geri grabbed the doorjamb to keep from falling at the sight. The child’s blond hair fluffed around her small head like a halo. Her pinafore dress reminded Geri of the dolls in toy store windows. Light seemed to shine from the small body, like Barbara Stanwyck’s sparkly dress in Ball of Fire.

The girl waved, repeating, “Mewwy Chwistmas!”

The mother stood up, turned around and smiled also. Geri shook her head at the sight of this Lee Remick wannabe, dressed in a full skirt, wearing gloves, toting Christmas bags and towing the angelic daughter beside her. What was she thinking coming to a stink hole like this? What a do-gooding idiot. Geri looked down at the tempting bag at her feet. Well, she wasn’t one to turn down free food. She pounced on it.

The woman took a tentative step toward her. “Hello, I’m…”

Geri clutched the bag to her bosom and slammed the door.

She leaned against the dingy wood, reached into the bag, and sank her teeth into the perfect mini loaf of gingerbread. Mmm. Lee sure could bake.

Who were these people? Geri picked up the envelope and opened the holiday card.

Merry Christmas from All Saint’s United Brethren Church. Crayon stars and a childishly scribbled name—Patty–embellished the inside.

Her name was Patty.

THE FRUGAL FIND OF THE DAY: Tea With Emma (The Teacup Novellas), Diane Moody {$0.99}

Sponsored Post

Diane Moody’s Frugal Find Under Nine:

Description of Tea With Emma (The Teacup Novellas):

Fresh from a Jane Austen tour in England, Maddie Cooper returns home to Texas, determined to bring a touch of “Austen to Austin.” She dreams of opening an authentic English tea room and, like Austen’s Emma, put into practice her self-proclaimed gift as a matchmaker. But an airport mishap with a cranky Englishman gets her off on the wrong foot (quite literally), especially when he moves into the university guest house across the street. Can Maddie find a love for her unapproachable new neighbor, or has she finally met her match?

Tea with Emma is the first in a series called “The Teacup Novellas.” Lucy Alexander has a serious case of writers’ block. That is, until her UPS guy delivers a box of vintage teacups – a gift from the estate of her late Aunt Lucille, her namesake. The teacups immediately take her back to memories of those many summers she spent with her beloved aunt and the special tea parties they’d share when Aunt Lucille would tell her all those wonderful stories. Suddenly the stories rush through Lucy’s mind like so many movie scenes all vying for her attention. And as those stories bombard her, she realizes her writers’ block has disappeared. A series of novellas begin to unfold in her mind. The first, a modern-day take of Jane Austen’s Emma . . .

Accolade:

I absolutely love the premise of the Teacup Novellas series – a collection of teacups, each with its own story. In Tea With Emma, the author weaves a delightfully sweet and sunny Austen-esque tale in Austin, Texas that combines a British professor of English literature, a tea-room opening and a lovingly meddlesome matchmaker-wannabe who nearly misses the perfect match under her very nose. A charming, fun read — I definitely recommend it!

An excerpt from Tea With Emma (The Teacup Novellas):

Chapter 1

British Airways flight 6732 from London Heathrow banked effortlessly toward the south, beginning its initial decent to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Maddie Cooper awoke, aware of the slight change in altitude. She lifted the window shade to peek at the horizon, now tilted at a perfect forty-five degree angle.

She gently touched the shoulder of her friend seated beside her. “Lanie, wake up. We’re almost home. We’re about to—” A vigorous yawn eclipsed her statement.

“Right, Maddie, like I was supposed to understand that?”  Elaine Morgan, known by all her friends as Lanie, clasped her fingers behind her neck, twisting her head back and forth. “Massive crick here. What time is it?”

“About 6:00 p.m. Eastern. We’re right on time.”

“Would the British have it any other way?” Lanie’s attempt at a stodgy English accent triggered the usual laughter.

Maddie arched a brow in that unspoken language between close friends, chiding the pitiful mimic.

“I say, old girl, are you mocking me?” Lanie continued, still stretching her neck.

“Indeed. I am most assuredly mocking you. I shan’t deny it a moment longer.” Maddie affected each syllable in her best English aristocratic imitation. “A fortnight in Jane Austen’s very world begs me do justice to Her Majesty the Queen’s native tongue. T’was not my intent to offend you. T’was only my desire to cause you mirth.”

“I mirth! I mirth! Enough already!” Lanie begged in a thick Southern drawl. Their joined laughter rang louder than intended. The seat in front of Maddie abruptly snapped upright. She and Lanie tried to squelch any further outbursts, but the resulting effort caused Maddie to snort, triggering more suppressed laughter.

The passenger in front of them jerked around the seat to face them with a harsh glare.

“Sorry,” Maddie mouthed sheepishly at him.

“Is it just me,” Maddie whispered into Lanie’s ear, “or do you feel like a child reprimanded by a crotchety old school teacher? Only he’s not that old. He can’t be that much older than us, can he? What a jerk.”

Lanie smirked, dismissing the man’s rude behavior with a flip of her wrist. She continued massaging the pain in her neck. “Oh, Maddie, didn’t we have the most wonderful time? I feel like we’ve been time traveling in another era. I just wish we could’ve stayed forever, don’t you?”

Maddie closed her eyes, reliving the sights and experiences of the past fourteen days on their official Jane Austen tour. “I do, but I’m determined to bring that whole mystique back with us to Austin.” She opened her eyes, turning toward Lanie. “Am I crazy to try this? Do you think I can actually pull off an authentic English tea room? I can’t remember being so sure of anything in all my life. A Jane Austen tea room in Austin, Texas. I mean, think about it. It’s got to be destiny! Patrons will think they’ve literally stepped into Chawton Cottage.

“Tell me I’m not dreaming, Lanie. Can I do it? Will you help me?”

“Of course you can, and of course I’ll help, silly. It’s just what Austin needs. And no one could do it better than you. Just don’t forget your promise to let me work there, m’dear.” The pitiful accent was back. “I’ll be a real asset to you, I will!”

“The job is yours but lose the Eliza Doolittle, will you?”

“Deal.”

“I still can’t believe Nana surprised us with this dream trip, can you?”

Lanie yawned again. “She’s amazing. And I think it’s so funny how she conspired with Jonathan to make all the tour arrangements for us. Who knew he could pull all that together?”

“That part doesn’t surprise me at all. He can do anything. He may be her attorney, but I’ve watched their friendship grow the last few years. He treats her—I don’t know, really special. Don’t you think?” Maddie smiled, envisioning dear Jonathan, his rim of white hair and the half-glasses permanently riding low on his prominent nose.

Maddie blinked out of her musings and picked up here she left off. “Jonathan positively adores her. All she has to do is reach for the phone and he comes running. But still, I’m blown away that she wanted to do this for us. It’s just too much.”

Lanie cocked her head and glared at her. “Too much? Look, you’ve taken care of her for almost eight years now. You’ve had more career offers than most people have in a lifetime, yet you shelved all of them to look after Nana after her stroke. You’re a saint and an angel, and she knows it. She was thrilled to do this for you. It’s not that big of a leap to figure it out. She’s just grateful, Maddie. Really, really grateful.” She pinched her friend’s elbow. “I’m just glad I got to tag along.”

“Ouch! Stop that!” Maddie rubbed her elbow with great flair. “Enough with the pinching, okay? Besides, you make me sound like Mother Teresa. Easy on the accolades or that regency bonnet I bought in Southampton will never fit.”

Lanie blew out a weary sigh. “But I’m serious! You’re an inspiration to everyone who knows you.” She looped her arm through Maddie’s on the armrest. “Me included. Not a bad birthday present either, that’s for sure. But then, a girl doesn’t turn thirty every day.”

“Shhh!” Maddie ducked down in her seat. “You don’t have to broadcast it to the entire plane.”

Lanie rolled her eyes. “What’s to hide? You’re smart, you’re beautiful, you’ve got great hair, you’re the most thoughtful and compassionate person I know. So what if you’re still single and seriously geriatric?”

“Stop!” Maddie growled playfully, smacking Lanie’s elbow and bringing on a fresh wave of giggles.

“DO. YOU. MIND!”

The Pierce Brosnan accent emerged from the contorted, infuriated face of the Scrooge peering over his seat at them.

Maddie blinked as her imagination took immediate flight onto the big screen. She, playing the part of Jane Austen’s Emma, being reprimanded by the handsome Mr. Knightley as they practiced archery, dressed in regal finery. Only this Mr. Knightley had thick brown hair with the slightest curl in it—a bit unruly perhaps—framing a frighteningly serious face. She noticed a few streaks of gray, surprising on someone so young. Only the faintest hint of laugh lines fanned his startling blue eyes. As if he once knew laughter—but not in a long, long time . . .

“In case you haven’t noticed, no one else on this aircraft is even remotely interested in your incessant chatter and ridiculous cackling.” The Brit spoke in angered tones barely above a whisper. His biting words snapped Maddie back to reality.

“I suggest you attempt to contain yourselves for the remaining moments of this flight or I shall ask the flight attendant to sequester both of you to the loo. Am I making myself quite clear?” His eyes blazed first at Lanie then at Maddie.

Neither moved or made a sound.

“Well? Am I?” he demanded.

“Quite. Yes. Quite.” Maddie’s words sounded stilted even to her own ears. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “We’ll try. We really shall try. Absolutely. Our deepest apologies. Deepest. Truly.” Oh no. Please tell me I didn’t say that with an accent? He’ll think I’m mocking him. She clamped her mouth shut and forced a pathetic smile.

Lanie elbowed her, casting an agitated glance before turning to face the intruder. “Listen, Ebenezer, I don’t know who you think you are, but unless you own this big bird, what gives you the right to—”

Maddie returned the jab.

“OW!”

“Please accept our apologies,” Maddie interrupted with no trace of an accent. “We won’t disturb you again.”

The man disappeared behind the seatback, his exasperated sigh drifting between the seats.

Half an hour later, the exhausted travelers gathered their belongings from the overhead compartments and exited the plane. Maddie and Lanie carefully avoided eye contact, or any other kind of contact, with Sir Scrooge. Through the terminal they kept a safe distance as they made their way to the baggage area.

“Maddie, look—it’s him,” Lanie grunted as they reached their carousel. “Get a load of all those bags. He must have paid a fortune in extra baggage fees. He’s got more luggage than we do combined.” She snorted. “The man travels like a girl.”

They broke into laughter again, more from fatigue than anything else, and watched his every move. Scrooge followed the sound until he spotted them, his jaw clenching at the sight of them. Visibly irritated, he looked away, busying himself as he counted all his bags. A uniformed skycap approached him, then began loading the bags onto a cart.

“What’s his problem anyway?” Maddie wondered, shaking off the distraction.

“Look, Maddie. Here comes your last suitcase. C’mon, let’s go. I’m beat.”

Maddie stepped through the crowd and reached for her bag, then stacked it atop her bigger one. Popping the handle up, she tilted the bags, rolling them behind her as she followed Lanie toward the exit doors. Lanie stopped short as her unsecured bags toppled over, spilling into everyone’s path. Maddie quickly helped her gather the scattered bags, moving them out of the way. “You know, it wouldn’t hurt to use the straps to—”

“Stupid bags. I knew better than to borrow these from Alice.”

“I’ll get this one, let’s just go.” Maddie grabbed a smaller bag. Just as the automated doors slid open, she glanced up to see a man in an expensive dark suit holding a printed sign bearing the burnt orange University of Texas logo:

Dr. IAN Grant

“Over here—I’m Dr. Grant.”

At the sound of the familiar English accent, Maddie turned around just as Scrooge handed off his bags to the skycap and headed toward the man in the suit.

“Welcome, Dr. Grant! I’m Howard Martin, head of the English department at the University of Texas. We’ve chatted on the phone.”

Scrooge extended his hand toward Martin who grasped it heartily. “Right. Of course. Nice to meet you in person at last, Dr. Martin.”

“On behalf of the University, I welcome you to the United States and to our great state of Texas. We are most excited about your upcoming year with us. I trust you had a good flight?”

“Oh great,” Maddie muttered under her breath. “We’ve ruffled the feathers of a visiting professor.”

Lanie moaned. “Well, I guess I can kiss my raise goodbye,” she whined, concerned about her job as an assistant librarian on campus. Even as the words left her mouth, her bags fell over again, this time sending a broken wheel skittering with lightning speed across the tiled floor. Maddie and Lanie watched in horror as the renegade wheel headed right for Scrooge as if on missile lock.

“No! No! No!” Maddie cried in a hoarse whisper.

Lanie grabbed her bags then pushed Maddie, rushing for the automated doors. “Move it, Maddie. We’ve gotta get out of here. Hurry!” Just as the doors slid open again, they heard the distinctive cry of a man who’d lost his footing.

“Ahhhhhhh—” Thunk!

“Dr. Grant! Are you all right?”

Maddie leaned back to look through the closing doors as the commotion erupted in their wake. “But shouldn’t we—”

Lanie propelled Maddie through the doors, then with thumb and forefinger bracing her lips, let loose an ear-piercing whistle.

“TAXI!”
