THE FRUGAL FIND OF THE DAY: The Dream Slayer, Jill Cooper {$1.99 or Borrow FREE w/Prime!}

Sponsored Post

Jill Cooper’s Frugal Find Under Nine:

Description of The Dream Slayer:

Two girls. Two worlds. One Destiny.

Natalie Johnson has always dreamed she’s someone else; calm, beautiful, in control. A chosen warrior with a maniacal arch nemesis and a dreamy boyfriend, the type that can make your knees melt and your heart quiver.

Real life is much different. She’s tormented by a bully and endures the sharp tongue of her father, but finds solace in her dreams.

When her bully ends up dead, de ja vu from a dream hits her hard as everything around her begins to fall apart. Whatever killed Sarah in her dreams is now in reality, hunting her from the shadows. And it wants her dead.

Somehow as the lines between reality and nightmare blur, Natalie must discover hidden strength to pull her friends and family back from the brink of madness.

Accolades:

Jill Cooper’s debut novel offers a lot of *punch.* Bam, kapow, hiyaaah! Witty dialogue, memorable characters, and hilarity in the face of certain doom all make for a stunning read.

Natalie,is nothing like Buffy.Shes better. Ms.Cooper gives us a much needed reality check and a breath of fang-tinted air.

I don’t know if I’ve written enough words to convey how addictive this world Jill Cooper has created is.

An excerpt from The Dream Slayer:

Her foot pumped the brake pedal, but still the bus would not be slowed. It would not be stopped. They were on a crash course with death and destruction.

Natalie’s least favorite D words.

The tires were long blown out on the yellow school bus. Its rims mulched a groove into the pavement and vibrated against the brake pads. Out of control, it veered left and accelerated until it rode up on its right-side wheels, the left wheels leaving the ground.

The bus driver was slumped on the floor, and in his place behind the steering wheel, Natalie gritted her teeth. The teenage girl shouted, “Hang on!” Her knuckles gripped the steering wheel, turning the speeding bus wildly to the right.

Her classmates screamed and jostled in their seats. Apparently, they didn’t appreciate her high-speed tour through the mountains of Meadow’s Creek.

Why don’t these buses have seat belts anyway?Natalie wondered to herself. There was no time to consider the answer. Just as she turned the corner, a pedestrian stepped out into the middle of the street.

Natalie swerved to avoid hitting him and narrowly missed the oncoming traffic. “This is the type of stress that causes wrinkles,” she muttered. Her pulse raced and the palms of her hands were sweaty. The bus jolted as it clipped the sidewalk, nearly ramming into a wooden bench.

When she’d left her house with café mocha in hand that morning, the last thing on Natalie’s mind was being cast in the “Speed” reboot. She let out a slow breath, beads of sweat clinging to her forehead, and kicked her boot to the brake. Except for a lot of squealing, nothing happened; the bus continued at top speed—right toward the high school.

Natalie could use a day off from homeroom and bad cafeteria food, but not like this.

She glanced down at the unconscious bus driver. “I really wish you were doing this.” With a rushed breath, Natalie throttled into neutral and applied the emergency brake.

Metal squealed against metal, and the steering wheel vibrated in her hands. The vibration traveled up her arms and down her spine like she was at the loudest rock concert in history. When she cranked to the left, the gears gave a high-pitched whine and smoke began to waft through the heat vents. The metal fought against her with everything it had, and Natalie just prayed she’d be strong enough.

The metal grinding itself into mulch was loud, but the students’ screams were louder. Fearing for their lives, their voices reached a new fevered pitch of wails and sobs. The bus spun, spiraling toward Meadow Creek High.

Natalie had spent half her high school career training for situations like these, but her stomach still churned, spinning out of control with vertigo. She could barely make sense of her surroundings but heard the bristle of tree branches and felt their twigs scrapping against her cheek. She swatted at them and held her arms up defensively as the bus lurched forward.

The front bumper caught on a fire hydrant and yanked the bus to an abrupt halt just inches from the school wall. The bus rocked onto two wheels before slamming down onto its final resting place, moaning like a dying t-rex.

The school was close enough to touch. Outside smelled like freshly cut lawn, but it was just the bus using its rims to till the earth. Natalie Johnson’s landscaping bus, at your service. She lowered her shaking arms from her face and took a deep breath, removing the keys from the ignition for some reason.

Her eyes trained on the fire hydrant. Everyone knew you weren’t supposed to park next to one of those, especially in a loading zone. I sure hope I’m not getting a ticket for this. As if my day isn’t going bad enough.

“Everybody okay?” Natalie’s voice was unsteady. The question sounded false to her; of course no one was okay.

Her classmates since elementary school remained seated. Some were green, others held their hands to their faces like they might puke, while a few clung to each other in terror. Marcy, a girl from homeroom, sobbed into her bundle of magazines repeating, “I’m not ready to die.”

Natalie stood on jelly legs and turned to face the group. “Everyone, we’ll be okay—”

ThumpThump. She was interrupted by a noise from above.

She gazed up and saw the roof vibrate from the weight of something heavy above her head. He was still on the roof.

KINDLE DAILY DEAL: The Soldier’s Wife, Margaret Leroy {$1.99 Today Only!}

A novel full of grand passion and intensity, The Soldier’s Wife asks “What would you do for your family” “What should you do for a stranger” and “What would you do for love”

As World War II draws closer and closer to Guernsey, Vivienne de la Mare knows that there will be sacrifices to be made. Not just for herself, but for her two young daughters and for her mother-in-law, for whom she cares while her husband is away fighting. What she does not expect is that she will fall in love with one of the enigmatic German soldiers who take up residence in the house next door to her home. As their relationship intensifies, so do the pressures on Vivienne. Food and resources grow scant, and the restrictions placed upon the residents of the island grow with each passing week. Though Vivienne knows the perils of her love affair with Gunther, she believes that she can keep their relationship—and her family—safe. But when she becomes aware of the full brutality of the Occupation, she must decide if she is willing to risk her personal happiness for the life of a stranger.

What readers are saying:

“With its stunning and evocative description of the Guernsey landscape, its subtle and astute depiction of a woman’s relationship with her children, her lover, and her husband, this absorbing novel is utterly beguiling.” —Rosamund Lupton, author of Sister

The Ghost Files Boxed Set
, J.R. Rain, Eve Paludan, Scott Nicholson, Evelyn Klebert ~ Free!

All three books in the bestselling Ghost Files Series, including:

GHOST COLLEGE
by Scott Nicholson and J.R. Rain

First in a new series featuring paranormal investigators Ellen and Monty Drew. Ellen claims to possess a sixth sense but Monty, a former P.I., only believes what he can see. She views their work as a sacred mission while Monty just wants a happy wife and a paycheck.

In GHOST COLLEGE, the Drews are summoned to a Southern California bible college after workers report hearing mysterious voices at night. When they encounter the unhappy ghost of a young girl, Monty’s skepticism is shaken, but he resolves to help his wife free the trapped spirit. Their search uncovers the Latin phrase “Non omnis moriar”—not all of me shall die—and they learn more about the site’s history as a Catholic school destroyed by an earthquake. But a mysterious presence has plans of its own for the young ghost, and Monty and Ellen must go head to head with a Dark Master that’s had more than a century of practice in demonic deeds. Now Monty must leave his body to do battle with the Dark Master, and he’s not sure Ellen will be able to bring him back in one piece. He’s not even sure what’s happening is real. All he knows is that all hell is breaking loose and he’s taking a crash course where an “F” means eternal damnation.

GHOST SOLDIER
by Evelyn Klebert

Paranormal investigators Ellen and Monty Drew’s dream vacation to New Orleans is prematurely cut short when they are unexpectedly and reluctantly put to work on a case that may be beyond their talents. Called to arms by Monty’s cousin Colonel, Monty and Ellen set out to clear a home on a military base of spirits that have been plaguing it with extreme paranormal phenomena. Both Ellen and Monty are drawn into a wild ghostly chase battling on both an earthly and metaphysical plane to reach the heart of the mystery before it’s too late and it reaches a horrifying hand into their world.

GHOST FIRE
by Eve Paludan

Paranormal investigators Ellen and Monty Drew go to West Los Angeles for some rest and relaxation, as well as to shop for items to redecorate their home. But, apparently, there is to be no respite. Ellen is a ghost magnet, so they now have about 48 hours to solve a spontaneous combustion mystery in a haunted co-op art gallery before its grand opening in Venice, California. Spirits abound, including a flapper from the 1920s who haunts the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, the tormented ghost of a jockey, the spirit of a horse that shows up at a barbeque, the ghost of a former professor’s wife, the possession of a cab driver, an ex-nun who paints dead people she’s never met, and the accidental release of one ticked-off chupacabra spirit.

A Beginner’s Guide To Juicing
, Sharon Daniels ~ Free!

With such an increased emphasis on health and nutrition, which comes on the heels of the rising obesity epidemic, many people are researching ways to look and feel good. In fact, there are hundreds of different products out there, all claiming to help you lose weight, strengthen your hair and nails, better your complexion, boost your immune system and mental strength.

The truth of the matter is, most miracle weight-loss and beauty programs are just money-making schemes from big corporations. In fact, these products can do more damage to your body than good.

So where do you turn?

There’s something out there that’s way better than all man-made products combined. Something that actually works. And you’re holding this miracle in your hands.

Juicing is an all-natural, all-clean method of losing weight, looking beautiful, becoming mentally stronger, and even a way of cleansing your system of toxins. And the best part is that it works, and it’s been proven to work by thousands of people – not by paid advertisers, but people like YOU.

Juicing is a natural cure, treatment, and prevention aid for almost any of life’s ailments, illnesses, and disorders. It’s cheap, convenient, and best of all, its benefits are enormous.

In this book, we’ll be running you through the basics, the guidelines, and the golden tips and tricks of juicing. You’ll be introduced to fifty delicious recipes that are as rewarding for your health as they are for your taste buds.

This book will cover the different categories of juicing:

Juicing for Cleansing and Detoxification

This is a big category, as most people associate juicing with cleansing and detox. Juicing is one of the safest and healthiest ways to quickly wash out harmful chemicals and replenish helpful bacteria in your digestive system. Whether you are interested in a full body cleanse/detox, an intestinal cleanse, a liver or kidney cleanse, or whatever else, juicing will provide you with a simple, thorough, and safe manner of doing so. Don’t forget, though, it’s important to remember before beginning any detox or cleansing program to consult your primary physician.

Juicing for Weight Loss/Weight Gain
This is another big category. Though most people turn to juicing for weight loss, many also use juicing as a way to gain weight and bulk up muscle.

Juicing for Mind and Body
This includes juicing for improved mental function, memory recall, focus and concentration, reduced stress, and anxiety. It also involves Remedy Juicing, which includes juicing to prevent, treat, alleviate pain or suffering, or heal illnesses, ailments, and disorders involving anything from a toothache to cancer.

Juicing for Healthy Aging and Beauty
Wrinkles, age spots, acne, uneven skin tone, varicose veins, cellulite, stretch marks, eczema, hair thinning, and hair loss – these are just a few of the reasons people juice for healthy aging and beauty. People in this category juice for soft, smooth, moisturized, even-toned, glowing, and radiant skin. They also want to gain bright eyes, a beautiful smile, and strong, healthy hair and nails. They also juice to assist in a healthy and graceful aging process.

Each recipe comes with easy to follow instructions that include:

  • Juice Prep Time
  • Difficulty Level
  • Yield
  • Nutritional Information

Everything in this book has been simply stated and crafted so beginning juicing is a breeze. It is my hope that you too will be able to benefit from the wonders of juicing, just as I have.

To your health,
Sharon Daniels

THE FRUGAL FIND OF THE DAY: Intermission: A First Mother’s Story, Betsey Norland {$2.99 or Borrow FREE w/Prime!}

Sponsored Post

Betsey Norland’s Frugal Find Under Nine:

Description of Intermission: A First Mother’s Story:

Seventeen-year-old Holly has a problem. She is pregnant by her high school boyfriend, and she has no plans to marry him. In fact, he hasn’t asked her, and even if he did, her mother won’t give consent to the underage marriage.  It is 1960. Abortion is illegal, and single motherhood is scorned. Out of options, Holly has been removed unceremoniously from her college dorm and packed off to a “Home”.  Well, it’s nothing like a home really, more like a place for girls to hide — fifty of them — each waiting out this unexpected intermission in her own secret story.

Holly’s mother, Bea, put her own dreams on hold when she married too young.  She has been supporting two kids on a secretary’s salary ever since their father left ten years ago. This is a far cry from the life she had imagined for herself when she was Holly’s age. Her daughter has a chance at something better, and Bea has no intention of allowing her to miss it by pinning her hopes on the wrong man. Elsa, Bea’s ex-mother-in-law, thinks her granddaughter ought to know the secret Bea keeps locked away in the bottom drawer of her desk. It is not until Ned, a not-so-eligible divorced man, comes into Bea’s life that everyone is ready for Act Two.

Intermission: A First Mother’s Story is a realistic and honest portrayal of an all too common teenage crisis in an environment that is now largely forgotten. The characters — profoundly human with their quiet strengths, their struggles and their small victories — provoke both laughter and tears, reminding us how far we have come while confirming how little has changed. If you never have faced this dilemma yourself, you doubtless know someone who has. This is a life-affirming story for all generations, a book to share with your mother, your daughter, your friends.

Accolades:

“Top marks to Betsey Norland for writing a story that is an easy and yet engrossing read. As a first novel, it is absolutely exceptional!” – Examiner.com

“It’s a captivating book that kept me reading late into the night about the story of this mother-daughter relationship.”

“As an adoptee I went into reading this book anxiously, wanting to understand the motivations and emotions of a biological mother. I was entranced…”

“This book spoke eloquently to my heart and my memory.”

An excerpt from Intermission: A First Mother’s Story:

It’s nothing like home. I’ll tell you that straight off, just in case you have sentimental notions. Someone must have dubbed it a Home back in the days when charitable ladies went around trying to rescue sinners – girls like me, I suppose. It was never really intended to be a home, though, as in a place where people live. It was meant to be a place for girls to hide.

The do-gooders who started the place called it the Florence Crittenton Home for Unwed Mothers. Those of us unfortunate enough to be familiar with the upstairs corridors didn’t bother with the formal name, though. We just called it Crit.

Of course, I didn’t know about any of that the first time my mother pulled our old Ford station wagon into the parking lot. I was just plain scared and determined not to show it.

A few weeks earlier the curtain had risen on the first act of what was supposed to be my brilliant future. I was a college student – a freshman in the Theater Department at Boston University. Everybody I knew was celebrating my talent and my potential. Then all of a sudden that “show” was cancelled. It became the classic actor’s nightmare scenario, as if I had discovered on opening night that the lines I had memorized were for a different play. Suddenly I found myself propelled to action in a scene for which I was completely unprepared.

Actors’ improv class is designed to teach you to think on your feet. You learn to make decisions quickly – to move and speak with confidence – even when something takes you completely by surprise. But in acting class the worst thing that can happen is you make a fool of yourself for a minute. The real-life decision I was facing that night would impact the rest of my life. I felt miserably miscast as star of my own story. I don’t mind telling you, I sometimes wish for a rewrite. Every once in a while the story starts playing itself over and over in my head, like one of those old movies they used to air on the Late, Late Show. Sometimes I just let it play and try out different endings. Sometimes I can stop it short, and it will quiet down for a while. But eventually, it starts up all over again. Usually, it begins with that Halloween night.

Did you download the freebie, Hostile Witness recently? If not, grab it now, because author Rebecca Forster is gifting 3 sets of the remainder of the Witness Series – that’s three additional books!

Here’s the set up of Hostile Witness {which I loved, by the way!}:

When sixteen-year-old Hannah Sheraton is arrested for the murder of her stepgrandfather, the chief justice of the California Supreme court, her distraught mother turns to her old college roommate, Josie Baylor-Bates, for help. Josie, once a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, left the fast track behind for a small practice in Hermosa Beach, California. But Hannah Sheraton intrigues her and, when the girl is charged as an adult, Josie cannot turn her back. But the deeper she digs the more Josie realizes that politics, the law and family relationships create a combustible and dangerous situation. When the horrible truth is uncovered it can save Hannah Sheraton or destroy them both.

“This story was inspired by a case my husband handled. As a superior court judge he had to sentence a minor to life in prison. It made me wonder how I felt about minors arrested for violent crimes. Are they most vulnerable among us – capable or horrible violence, perceived as adults and yet emotionally still children?” Rebecca Forster (rebeccaforster.com)

“An enthralling read, with colorful, well-developed characters and the unique atmosphere of the California beach communities.” Nancy Taylor Rosenberg

“Blending complex psychological character portraits with spot-on accurage courtroom drmaa, Forster’s riveting legal thriller keeps the plot twists coming until the last, satisfying page.” – Alafair Burke

An excerpt from Masks of the Lost Kings (Suzy da Silva Series):

They emerged from the black, dripping jungle night already bruised and drenched from the hot rain of the Tumbala Mountains. Ben and José, his tribal guide, were making progress, but it didn’t feel like it. In every direction unbroken jungle spread out around them in spirals of verdant green, impeding their every move, slowing down every step as it clutched at their limbs, trying to trip them up and hold them back. Something was following them in the trees above their heads. Ben guessed it was monkeys disturbed by the flames of José’s Cahune palm torch and made anxious by this intrusion into their nighttime privacy. Mosquitoes patrolled in jerky circles, mounting regular painful attacks on their sweating skins. All around, the buzz of cicadas crested and receded like tropical ocean waves, making it hard to listen for any sounds of impending danger.

Just like the heat, a sense of menace cloaked the ancient Mayan rain forest like a deadly veil.

The gods had been starved for over a thousand years. Now they wanted a sacrifice. They demanded blood.

The temptation to turn and run was almost overwhelming, but Ben knew he couldn’t give up now. This search for a sacred truth was his chosen quest. If he could pull this off, his reputation as an archaeologist and astrophysicist would be assured. He would win his place in the history books forever. His hunger for the truth had led him inexorably toward this ancient prize, the captivating pyramidal Temple of Inscriptions. Beneath its stone interior lay the mysterious subterranean death crypt of King Pacal that Ben was risking everything to unveil. The tribal elders and survival experts he had consulted had all issued the same warning, telling him of the wet season’s bloodthirsty mosquitoes, vicious horseflies and mud traps that could suck in a man up to his knees, or worse. Everyone said it would be best to wait until the place dried out in summer, but the lure was too great and Ben was too impatient. He couldn’t risk waiting even for a few months and losing out to a rival. Inside this jungle lay a giant Mayan lost city, with a secret concealed for a thousand years, a secret that he now had the code to unlock.

The sweet smell of orchids filled the hot, wet air and brilliant blue butterflies floated randomly past, like musical notes, suspended in narrow beams of moonlight. Ben’s shirt snagged on the spiky tropical leaves, making him twist awkwardly. His foot shot out from under him, toppling him sideways. Suddenly he was falling through the air as if the ground had opened up beneath him. Grab something, his mind shrieked. Anything! A jolt slammed through him as his hand caught a tree root, halting his fall, while his left knee smashed into hard stone. Dirt and rocks were falling around him. His muscles screamed in pain as he clung on in the dark. He must be hanging over the side of a ravine but he had no idea how deep it was beneath his flailing feet.
